Food For Thought - Using Food to Increase Cognitive Ability

"The fact is, it’s all in your head – because your brain runs the ‘operating system’ for your entire life. Not just your memory, focus and IQ, but every conscious and unconscious decision, craving, and impulse. That means giving your brain an upgrade can have a profound impact on just about every area of your life – even your energy, mood, and relationships.
In fact, when you have a high-functioning brain, you also become a better, higher-performing version of yourself, and practically everything you do will require less effort. And the good news is, the science shows you can build a stronger, sharper, more resilient brain at any age". - David Asprey

To function best, the brain requires around 45 nutrients that are as distinct as the molecules, cells, and tissues they shape. The brain, being radically efficient, makes many of these nutrients itself, and only ‘accepts’ whatever else it needs from our diets.

Put simply: Everything in the brain that isn’t made by the brain itself is ‘imported’ from the food we eat

The blood-brain barrier determines which nutrients can—and cannot—make their way into the organ upstairs. There are gates in the brain that open and close depending on whether the brain is ‘hungry.’ No other organs in the body have the same strict rules.

Here is a list of the BEST foods for a Happy Brain:
  • Fatty Fish (salmon, anchovies, etc)
  • Eggs
  • Cold-Pressed Olive Oil (never heated)
  • Broccoli (always heated)
  • Nuts: Almonds, Walnuts, Pumpkin and Sunflower Seeds
  • Berries
  • Dark Chocolate (winning)
  • Water
  • Coffee & Green Tea
All of these are on the list because they are the best sources for one or more of the following: Omega-3 fats, Folic Acid, Choline, Vitamins B,K,E, Zinc, L-Theanine, Anti-oxidants, Flavonoids, and Polyphenols. It just so happens that all of these foods listed, are also great for your heart and blood vessels.

Incorporating some or all of these foods into your daily/weekly lifestyle will have a significant effect on your brains overall health, function and longevity. These will serve in protecting your brain from all of the scary things that can happen to it, increase your memory, enhance decision making skills, promote better stress management and probably even drop you a few pounds!
